Barbara Takase served as a District Court judge for the Third Circuit for seventeen years. She served as a per diem judge for five years before being appointed as a full-time judge, assuming the role as Deputy Chief Judge for the Third Circuit for six years before her retirement in 2016. Before her judicial appointment, she served as Hawaii County prosecutor for nine years. In 2016, Judge Takase was recognized as Distinguished Alumni by UH Hilo for her outstanding contributions and lifelong dedication to the community as a social worker, victim witness counselor, prosecuting attorney, Department of Education administrative hearings officer, attorney in private practice, District Court Judge, and Deputy Chief Judge of the Third Circuit. Judge Takase received her J.D. from William S. Richardson School of Law in 1989 and her B.A. from UH Hilo.
