Hate Crimes

July 8, 2024Hawaii Revised Statutes §846-51 through -54 require the Department of the Attorney General to develop, direct, and report annually on a statewide hate crime statistics reporting program. With input and assistance from Hawaii’s police departments and prosecutors, the program was developed during the fall of 2001 and officially launched on January 1, 2002. Hate Crimes in Hawaii, 2023 is the twenty-first annual publication and covers hate crime cases that reached a final disposition during Calendar Year 2023.  Seven hate crimes were reported to the program for this time period.  In addition, the Honolulu Department of the Prosecuting Attorney reported 17 cases that should have been submitted previously, during the 2017-2022 period. Twenty-two-year summary statistics are also included.
